2018 MLK Youth Symposium

The MLK Youth Symposium is an extension of the Dr. MLK Jr. Commemorative Commission that puts on the King Week Celebrations for the Knoxville community.

The MLK Youth Symposium includes workshop presentations, youth led entertainment, and a service project aimed at promoting leadership, self-awareness, and addressing current issues that heavily impacts our local and global communities. The symposium encourages students to take the initiative to educate themselves, focus on their futures, and propose solutions to community concerns. The Youth Symposium is open to youth of all ages, and is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Austin- East Magnet High School.

We are seeking individuals who are willing to serve as volunteers by assisting the committee with the flow and execution of the day’s activities. Additionally, I would like to invite your organization to participate in our organization showcase. The showcase is an inaugural piece that we are implementing to enable local organizations to educate the attendees about their services and contributions to the community. Moreover, this provides an opportunity for students to get informed about available resources in their local community. We would love for your organization to engage with the students and set up a table at our event.

Below you will find a brief description of the needed positions along with the link to sign-up for positions and shifts.

Set-up and Registration: Meet at Austin- East Magnet High at 7:30 AM. Facilitate the registration table and direct students to the appropriate location following breakfast

Facilitator’s assistants: Ensure that the facilitator of each break-out session has their necessary material(s). Be comfortable with engaging and leading conversation with students

Lunch Prep: Direct lunch traffic and clean up afterwards

Group Facilitator: Monitor students behavior and encourage participation within session

Service Project Assistants: Assist students with the service project at hand.

Traffic flow: You will be placed at specific points in the venue to help the flow of traffic and answer questions regarding the session locations

The time served at the symposium can be credited towards any organization or program that you may need volunteer hours for. If you need confirmation of your volunteered time, we will have signed certificates/forms for you. Please notify me in advance if you will need a form.
